Why Is Talent Development Important
Charles Coy wrote an article that appeared in Cornerstone’s ReWork newsletter, entitled “5 Things the Modern Worker Looks for in Talent Development”. The article starts off talking about the changing workforce due to millennials and Gen Z. Since they have grown up with the internet, they are used to the ability to learn at, as Coy wrote, “the click of a button”.
According to the article leadership development and personalized learning are top priorities. Coy references a recent Gallup poll, an Adecco survey, and Deloitte's 2016 Millennial Survey regarding these two findings.
Leaders and HR professionals need to consider this or risk losing talent – Are there enough leadership development opportunities? Does the company have career paths so employees know where they can go and how they can get there?
Mentoring is another priority. Seventy-nine percent of millennials believe that mentoring is crucial to their success.
Leaders and HR professionals should formally (or at least informally) help create mentoring relationships, including (and especially) peer-to-peer mentoring.
Feedback and an engaging environment round out the recommendations from Coy. Today’s employees want more feedback than just the annual performance review and they want flexibility.
Leaders and HR professionals need to create an environment where feedback is a gift. They also need to lead employees to learning options, not always be prescriptive.
